It is a well known fact around here that Budge and I have diametrically opposite thought processes. We all know that there are many roads to the same place (see flayed felines), but each of us goes about it differently. We don't work together mostly. Sometimes it works out, once we both get on the same page. We have ceased discussing methods of work and just cede the authority to the other individual because the job will get done either way.. We are again (still) working on the beams. We managed to finishing gluing on all the support pieces for the tops and bottoms of the beams. We dodged the weather all week. It would look like rain, then it would be sunny, then it would rain at night. Every day was like this. We would expect rain and get spitter sputter instead of pitter patter. We usually got a late start and had to cover everything at night.
It's hard to see here, but we clamped a board on top of the plywood webbing to fair the curve of the top of the beam. We then clamped the support pieces in two directions and epoxied and screwed them in. They eventually looked like this.
The top board is the board we used to make sure that the support pieces looked good. There are two top boards and two bottom boards glued on to this to make the I-beams. We had to straighten out a beam that had a curve in it. We laid it on it's side and precariously balanced a 5 gallon bucket filled with concrete to pull out the curve and then glued the first board on while it was laying on it's side. It worked pretty well.
Boatergirl returned to the Fatherland from the Motherland in the weekly contemporary temporal version of Solomonic child division. We proceeded to put her to use. She says she hates sanding (duh!) so we put her on nailing.
That Neil is on the move again (someday, goddammit). He gets a buncha well wishers writing poetry and gushing about the lifestyle. No one writes anything here. My 3 followers just consume this literary pap with no feedback (and, no wonder). Wake up! Send feedback, write poetry, gush! Oh. never mind, I'm not about that stuff. My boat isn't a lifestyle. It's a boat. Look under "Transportation" in the encyclopedia. I'm going traveling to meet people and see things. Maybe if I wrote more about the glories of boating, building, and bumming around...............................but it's hard work, steals your time and can suck out your soul. Hey, I gotta work on being more chipper............... Nah.
Ben finished painting the hatches. Grin and Bear It, the Boater Kids, on their triumphant return from one's birthday bash, proceeded to continue their nefarious deeds by getting sick and spreading pestilence around the environs. Ben was down and out for two days and I'm feeling quasi crappy today.
Who knows what evil lurks......................................................................
We found a big fat black widow spider.......................... The current shop bug is the iridescent green beetle (stinkbug). Last weekend we stumbled on a sail boat to putter around in on the the lake. It's a tiny keelboat. Here's a picture:
Sounds like something Elmer Fudd would use when he's hunting wabbits. We decided that the Mirror dinghy was too tight for both of us to crawl around in (gotta stay on that diet). We are doing a bit of repairs to it and are looking for a motor. There are a lot of snags around and we need to get in and out easier. It will be a cool little boat for a quick sail.
It needs a new washboard for the cabin.......
And a cleanup of the covers.....
These Potters (Ours is a 15") apparently have a following. Of course, every boat that I ever had has a following. Ah, the internet. Ben named it the "Crown", after our favorite cheap Canadian whiskey, Potters Crown.
Budge says he's learned a lot about woodworking from me but I haven't learned boatbuilding from him. I beg to differ, I have learned a lot, mostly DONT BUILD BOATS!
Rock and Roll fans talk about "Guitar Gods" This is the only Ukelele God. We saw him in the Big D on Thursday.................awesome...................on two less strings!
Chuck! Send money!
