Red S̶a̶i̶l̶s̶  Masts In The Sunset, The Trip (God Found Out) and That Weird Halloween Thing

The Budges went to the boat show at Annapolis this week. Boat shows, like the Sirens of Odysseus, lure men to their doom with their song of shiny boats and sophisticated electronics,  thus perpetuating of the dream, the fuel of the fiasco.

Me, too, fiasco perpetuating, finding the spot, the place, the yard. I Loaded up Ol' (T)Rusty and traveled south on Wednesday. I was just going to sleep in the truck at the state campground, Tropical storm, Nate, was churning up the Gulf, pushing water north. The tent sites of the campground on the bay side were flooded. Thanks a lot, God. I hope he unsubscribes. This is getting ridiculous. I checked out several yards and drove back Thursday. It looks like I'll be launching in Galveston.

I didn't think I could make it to the Port Aransas Wooden Ply Boat show October 22. Now the Show won't make it this year at all. The hurricane before the last two caused more damage than they thought, so the Show is rescheduled for spring 2018:     http://portaransasplywoodenboatfestival.org/
It's still a mess and the next gulf hurricane will swing east- Duck, Alabama!

It seems like all major stuff in my life of late centers around Halloween. When I built the house, all the major events gravitated around that date: The timberframe workshop and frame raising, the week of helping with a barn the year before, the actual move in a year later.. Now here I am again with Halloween looming, the move closer.

Ok, so here's the tillers finally in place. We had to measure the length of the tiller connecting bar so we could make it all work. Modifications were in order.

Drill holes for pins. The transverse tiller bar will sit on these pins and connect the rudders.

Lop off a couple bolts to act as pins.

Round the ends.

Cut off yea much of the tillers.

Round off the tillers.

Tiller cut offs relegated to the scrap bin to be resurrected at some future date and reborn as some part of the boat.

Pins glued in the cut off tillers. I did this in the rain. It started raining as soon as I mixed the epoxy. Please, God, watch over me a little less. Or am I his only source of amusement. There's always politics.

I then trimmed both ends of the tiller bar there and there (the marks, silly). Next I painted the cut offs.
I left Wednesday for the Houston trip. 300-400 miles away in search of a boat yard. Most yards didn't have the travel lift to accommodate the 22' beam of the boat. It's not set in stone yet, but Galveston looks like the spot. I am tapping the rapidly dwindling stock if my two son's inheritance. Hell, they don't need it. They are the most capable people I know. I came back Thursday evening, drained. I need a vacation!
I couldn't afford red sails, so I'll have to settle for red masts. That damn money god.

My neighbors of 4 years, the harvester ants. Their hill is perfect condition right now. The area is cleared in a 5' radius circle . They will be harvesting the grass seeds soon. Their trails radiate out from the nest to create a highway to bring in the crop. Ben tried to feed them fruit at one point, but they are not sugar ants, they just cut it up and hauled it off. They will bite if you mess with them, but they are not evil like fire ants.

Today I scrubbed the stove, in preparation of putting it in.
I spent two days cutting tile for the galley. I'll set them next week. I spent way too much time fretting over this. Blue, like the sea. Blue, like my mood of late. Blue like my bruises from building. Once the sink was located, Budge drilled a hole for the sink drain,
