Same Ol' same Ol'

I'm getting pretty fed up with these galley doors! I've been through several iterations of trying to make them work. I've produced a lot of scraps and spun my wheels a lot! Here are some failure scraps:

I am using some oak with checks, holes, splits, and general fragility. I cut down these to around ¼" thick  and glued them up to form panels. They are pretty delicate and needed support. I was going to make them with a frame around them  and started making frames. That didn't work. I  tried to cut the frames curved. That didn't work. I cogitated more. I did that a lot! The weather dropped in the middle of the week and I lost a couple of days. I read "A Game of Thrones".  Finally I cut some backing pieces to the correct shape and glued them to the backs of the panels. Nothing is square. The top has a different curvature than the bottom. Sometimes I have to stop and  squirt some glue into cracks and weak spots and clamp it.

I think they'll work..........I think. They will fill the space. I ordered some hinges.  The will have character. I ran out of wood glue and that slowed me down. The glue is 23 miles away and Ben (remember Ben?) still is in Ohio with the transportation.  He has been dealing with broken things: trucks, relationships, clothes dryers, frozen pipes, fireplace gaskets. He says he'll come back soon. Budgetboater glued in the rest of the tumblehomes and affixed the hatch coamings in place last week. I started making the coaming side pieces.  The hatches will be a mite complicated to slow down water infiltration. There will be 3 gaskets arouned them and stepped to divert the water so when that come-to- Jesus wave crashes down on top of them the cabins should remain dry(ish). I was going to make the hatches slide back, but we changed the plan. That's why there's a cutout in the front. I'll have to fill it back in. It's best to think these things through before you start.

It looks simple, but remember, the hull is curved and the side piece must be straight and parallel to the top so the gasket will seal. Stay tuned fans and fannies! So, my adversity did have an up side. You know what they say "if life gives you lemmings, jump off a cliff" or something like that. Anyway, I took all the scrapped oak from the galley doors soaked them in water,  and stuffed them in our makeshift smoker and smoked a rack of ribs for 6 hours.

One could say that this is the first meal produced from the galley!

The Music ♫: Early Joan Baez.

"Old Blue" is the 12th one in. It's been rambling through my brain lately. Let it run, it's the whole album. Lots of Child ballads. I  see that you tube has deleted this. Sorry, I only want people to hear the music. I do not intend to steal the music, just to let people know about the artist and maybe buy their music. Support these artists by buying their music.
